Chris Murphy

Chris Murphy is a ceramic artist whose work explores and experiments with aspects of dereliction and decay, as he observes these from natural structures and the English landscape.

Chris works with a combination of materials, textures and colours, including glass - to deepen the depth of his work; allowing the observer an intimate journey into the heart of his ceramics. This world embraces both structure and form; and interacts with man made elements, provoking the observer to question the value of the structure from a sculptural perspective.

He prefers to work within the realm of the structure. Edges, texture, and balance are commonplace within traditional ceramics, yet he uses these in a uniquely integrated configuration; and in so doing, elevates them beyond their own identifiable form and function. The conclusive forms are not recognised vessels; however, they represent profound arguments concerning the perception of erosion, decay, colour, surface and texture.

Chris would argue that his ceramics are a continuous evolution, where one piece or period of work naturally flows into another. It is a journey, an exploration - where the observer is eager to move onto the next stage of this adventure; as well as linger or revisit and interpret the journey afresh.
